RYA SRC VHF Radio Course  (1 Day)  - Classroom (Max. 4)

A one-day course for anyone who owns a fixed or hand-held marine VHF radio.

We limit numbers to maximum of 4 students to ensure the best experience and practice.    (If you want a group large this can be arranged but will be over 2 days.)

The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to operate a VHF radio fitted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on any British vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio.

A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. Unnecessary transmissions could block out a Mayday distress call.

All new VHF sets are either fitted, or can be interfaced, with DSC allowing calls to specific vessels. If you hold the ‘old’ VHF licence (pre-1999) you need to upgrade your qualification if you purchase new equipment. This can be done by attending this one-day course or doing the online course.

Course topics include:

  • the basics of radio operation
  • the correct frequencies (channels) to be used
  • distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures
  • making ship to shore telephone calls
  • Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using training radios
  • Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
  • Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB)
  • Search and Rescue (SART)

The course will be taught using training radios, each student being provided with there own radio for duration of course and we also have a variety of other teaching aids.

The Cost of Course includes:

  • RYA VHF Radio Handbook   (£14.95 included in course)
  • Lunch and Refreshments

Excludes Examination Fee  £60 no VAT if paid direct to RYA [HERE]

or £72 inc VAT if paid on day to SPR - (This due to HMRC VAT Rules)

This will be examined by a short written test and a practical assessment by an external examiner.   This will take around 1 hrs to 2 1/2 hrs, depending on numbers on course.

This normally happens between  1700hrs and 1930hrs on day of Course.
